Exploring the enchantment of Mariachi at Xcaret

Mariachi, that musical genre that evokes the passion, joy and culture of Mexico, has transcended borders and has become an icon recognized around the world.

In the heart of this rich musical tradition, emblematic places like Xcaret offer unforgettable experiences by fusing the essence of mariachi with the magic of its shows.

Originating in the region of Jalisco, this musical genre is a blend of indigenous, Spanish and African influences. Mariachi has evolved over the years, incorporating various instruments such as the guitar, vihuela, guitarrón, trumpet and violin.

The vast repertoire of mariachis includes songs from the different regions of Mexico, jarabes, minués, polkas, valonas, chotis, waltzes, serenatas, corridos (typical Mexican ballads that tell of fights, exploits and love stories) and traditional songs of rural life.

Beyond being just music, mariachi is a cultural expression that captures the Mexican identity, traditions and festive spirit. Since 2011 it was named by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity for its music of strings, trumpets and singing.

Abigahil Espinoza, also a member of the female mariachi Adelitas de Xcaret, told us that she fell in love with mariachi music when she began studying at the Escuela de Mariachi Ollin Yoliztli in Garibaldi in Mexico City.

When asked how she became a member of the Adelitas de Xcaret mariachi, Abigahil shared with us:

“Five years ago, which was when the Adelitas de Xcaret project began, I auditioned in Guadalajara and was selected, but I always wanted to work here, since the first time I visited Xcaret when I was 12 years old, I knew I wanted to work here."

On the other hand, Miguel Ángel Palomar, a member of the Xoximilco mariachi band, told us that he also comes from a family of musicians;

"My start in music began by inheritance, I come from a family of musicians, since my great-grandfather has been a Mariachi Musician. It is important to mention that my grandfather (Román Palomar Arreola) is the composer of the famous Mariachi Loco".

The Art of Mariachi Costumes

The Mariachi not only stands out for its musical virtuosity, but also for the imposing elegance it projects through its traditional costumes. Mariachi dress is a crucial visual element that adds a touch of authenticity and solemnity to their performance.

With wide-brimmed hats, shiny silver buttons, and black charro or brightly colored costumes, Xcaret's mariachis embody the very essence of Mexican tradition. Every detail, from the colorful buttons to the fine inlays, reflects the meticulousness with which the aesthetics of the charro costume, an indisputable symbol of Mexican culture, are cared for and preserved.

When we interviewed the members of the Mariachi de Xcaret, they revealed that the costume is not only an attire, but an expression of respect for the music and a tribute to the roots that define their identity. Thus, the combination of exquisite music and the visual majesty of their costumes creates a multi-sensory experience that transports viewers directly to the very heart of Mexican tradition.

For me the charro suit is not only a uniform, it is the best inheritance that my father could have left me and I wear it with all the gallantry that is due to wear the most iconic costume of our Mexico. I am 100% proud to be able to dress as a charro. The first time I put on my first charro suit I will never forget it, it was a dream come true. -Miguel Angel Palomar.

For me it's an honor, it's something big, you see yourself in the mirror and you say "I'm something big, I'm important" something powerful, wearing the mariachi costume gives you a feeling of empowerment. - Abigahil Espinoza

Emblematic Mariachi Songs

The Mariachi repertoire is not only a showcase of musical skill, but also a celebration of the most iconic songs of traditional Mexican music. Among the melodies that have left an indelible mark on the hearts of their listeners are classics such as "Cielito Lindo", "El Rey" and "Guadalajara". These songs, with their poetic lyrics and captivating melodic arrangements, encapsulate the essence of Mexican culture and serve as a link between the past and the present.

In speaking with the mariachis, they expressed the importance of carefully selecting these pieces, not only for their global recognition, but also for the ability of each to tell a unique story that resonates with the diversity of experiences in Mexico.

Thus, Mariachi de Xcaret performs music and acts as guardians of a musical legacy that transcends generations and borders, connecting people through the timeless notes of these immortal songs.

To close, we'll leave you with a recommendation from each mariachi we talked to:
