Surfing is an extreme sport full of adrenaline, it’s living a moment of deep connection with something so immense and full of life as it is the ocean.

This sport was introduced to Mexico back in the early sixties when a group of Californian surfers looking for new adventures reached the beaches of Baja California (Tijuana, Ensenada, and Rosarito) and gradually discovered and popularized Mexican beaches thanks to the variety of scenarios that the Pacific Coast offers.

San Miguel, Ensenada

This place is considered the “mecca' of the Mexican surf. Because of the proximity to the beaches of southern California, Ensenada quickly became an excellent place to practice surf in Mexico. With long and fast waves height up to 10 feets, Playa San Miguel is one of the most popular beaches among foreigners and local surfers.

Isla de Todos Los Santos… or should we call it “big waves Island'?

This bay was declared the sixth World Surf Reserve because of its gigantic waves, and it’s only 18 miles away from Ensenada. A couple of tournaments like the Big Wave World Tour have taken place here. A great place for practicing surf but not for everybody. Are you brave enough to surf  waves of 59 feets high?

Rosarito, Baja California

In this spot, you’ll find waves for all surfers, from beginners to experts, all along it’s almost 2 and a half miles. It depends on the season whether you’ll find good or greater waves, it’s in winter for example, that the best ones appear thanks to the northern winds…. and not only does Rosarito has beautiful beaches, but you’ll also enjoy the warmth of its people and the great vibe on the streets.

Zippers, Los Cabos

Located in San Jose de Los Cabos, you’ll find Zippers. This beach offers long and good speed waves, ensuring hours of fun. Venue beach of one of the most important tournaments in the country, Los Cabos Open of Surfing, a competition that gathers all of the best surfers in the world, all competing to show who would be the king of the Baja beaches.

La Ticla, Michoacan

Ticla is a beautiful and unique place in Mexican Pacific Ocean, it has a great sea which offers good size but low-speed waves, you will find natural areas sparsely populated and semi-virgin beaches. The place is located in the indigenous community of Santa Maria Ostula, making it a beautiful ecotourism center with amazing scenarios.

Sayulita, Nayarit

In Riviera Nayarit, we can find a place growing in popularity within Mexico surf culture thanks to the different scenarios that you can find: coral reefs, big waves or smoother beaches to have fun a couple of hours. Sayulita now is one of the favorite surf spots for locals and foreigners, surfers can enjoy strong long waves or short waves, it depends if you prefer a short or long surfboard. It is an excellent challenge for all levels.

Punta Mita, Sinaloa

Located 50 minutes north away from Puerto Vallarta’s airport, Punta Mita will amaze us with its landscapes and relaxed mood. The first beach you can go to catch pretty good waves is called Stinky’s; this peculiar name is because of the many fishing boats located here. El Anclote is our second recommendation where you can spend all day surfing in long but smooth waves.

Bonfil, Acapulco

Bonfil is a touristic town located in Punta Diamante beach in Acapulco, Guerrero, and the most important surf point in the state.  It is a crowded place but the beach and waves are long enough to receive all the surfers only if you are good enough to defeat its great pipes.

Revolcadero, Acapulco

Along with Bonfil beach, Revolcadero is another significant point for local and international and championships. It is a very accessible spot inside the famous touristic area and it is well known for being the birthplace of surfing in Acapulco. You can ride the best waves from April to September when they reach the 6 feets high.

Zicatela, Puerto Escondido

Puerto Escondido and Zicatela, located in Oaxaca, are the most famous surfing spots in the country. It is considered as “The Mexican Pipeline” with waves of up to 20 feet  of height. It is a real challenge for pros who compete in the two international events in July and August. Besides its tropical warm weather, Zicatela is well known for its ambiance and nightlife in local bars, where you will also find a lot of parties full with good vibes and surfers chilling after a good waves session.

Already feel like grabbing your board and jump in the water? Definitely, surf is a sport for the bold and adventurous ones, every move and ride of a surfer will show the love and respect for the beach and the ocean.
